Watch Out For Summertime Health Threats PDF Print E-mail

Overheating

On a hot summer day the inside of your car heats up very quickly. On an 85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside your car - with the windows slightly opened - will reach 102 degrees in 10 minutes! The closed confines of a car interfere with a dog's normal cooling process, that is, evaporation through panting. Be safe, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PET IN A CAR ON A HOT DAY!

Ticks

A female tick can lay up to 20,000 eggs in a single mass. That's why it's important to check your dog every day during hot weather. The best way to remove a tick is to grasp it gently with tweezers, as close to the dog's skin as possible, and pull it straight off. Be careful to remove the head and not to squeeze the tick as it can cause more bacteria to be spread. Fingers, matches, petroleum jelly, nail polish, and alcohol are not proper ways to remove ticks.
